![]() It is important to insist on the fact that a reservoir will be “something like a lake”, but not exactly the same. When the filling of a reservoir starts, a transition from lotic (river-like) to lentic (lake-like) conditions starts, and by this development the living conditions of aquatic organisms change dramatically. On the other hand, improvement of the road network can also be a benefit for the local population. This will be done by developing and implementing a traffic management plan as part of the ESMMP (see Chap. These are impacts that need to be identified, and, more importantly, managed for the duration of the construction works. There will be an impact during the construction period due to the heavy traffic required for transports to and from the site, mainly noise and dust, but also the increased risk of accidents, especially where such roads are passing through settlements. In an inhabited area, access as such is usually not a problem, since very often existing roads can be used extension of the road network may be required to some degree, or existing roads may have to be upgraded, but the incremental impact of the project under such conditions is usually rather small. ![]() for bringing in equipment like drilling rigs for geological investigation of the selected site. Overall, this book aims at contributing to put the discussion about hydropower and dam projects on a more objective level.Ĭonstruction of an HPP requires access, and often this is necessary already in the preparatory stage, e.g. It will be of interest not only for ESIA (Environmental and Social Impact Assessment) practitioners, be they consultants involved in the preparation of such studies or staff members of environmental protection agencies having to come to decisions based on them, but also for engineers and planners involved in such projects, developers, and people interested in questions related to energy, environment, and climate change. The focus is on environmental issues, while the other main subject-social impacts-is mentioned here only briefly. This book describes the entire process of environmental impact assessment for hydropower and dam projects, not from a legal or regulatory point of view, but from a very applied one, based mainly on the personal experience of the author, who is involved in this field of work since over 40 years, by describing the different steps of such an assessment, covering all major aspects to be dealt with.
